This may be disputed, the first team to return to shore was the entry from the Copeland cottage.

6 Person Relay race
This may not come as a surprise, this may be the start of a dynasty,
1st place goes to the Rock Island entry in the Jarvis canoe with
participants from the Jarvis, McLean and Heal families.

We should note that the Cookson's still have some t-shirts for sale at
their cottage, women's sizes only. You can drop by to pick one up in
case you missed them at the regatta.

Cam

Of special note
We have a group of volunteers that want to plan next year's regatta:
Theresa Freel, Jeff Miller, Darryl Jarvis, Don Heal
I'll be sending out another email to link these people so we can start
early to make this a special day.

Fire Destroys Magnetawan General Store

on July 30, 2011

Carbon Monoxide

Attached is a portion of an article taken from a recent FOCA publication regarding smoke alarms and Carbon Monoxide Monitors
While smoke alarms are mandatory, carbon monoxide (CO) monitors are not and should be of particular interest to those of us with wood stoves and propane appliances.
A word of caution - in reading the many reviews of CO monitors on the Canadian Tire website, it seems that many of them are inclined to give false alarms. No doubt an unsettling experience in the middle of the night.

Magnetawan River Watershed Association

Minutes of 2011 Annual Meeting

This meeting was attended in an unoffical capacity by Frank Tod who kindly forwarded the Minutes.
There appears to have been a great deal of discussion (recorded in the "President's Report") regarding the objectives and need for such an Association. Please take the time to read this as it may come up for discussion at our AGM

Area Health Care

As you may know, the Burks Falls Hospital has been shut down for some time, resulting in trips to Huntsville or North Bay for urgent care.
Ownership of the buildings have now been transferred to The Village of Burks Falls, and the Almaguin Highlands Health Centre Committee is working to promote a Community Health Centre.
As seasonal residents we feel it is important to support this effort.
The Committee now has a website almaguin-health.org with an on-line survey which you are urged to complete.

Biodegradable Soap???

There is a popular misconception that so-called "biodegradable" soaps and shampoos are safe to use in the lake. The following article, while directed primarily towards campers, is equally applicable to cottagers.

Elizabeth Pelot Memorial Cup

Last summer a number of cottager friends of the late Elizabeth (Morris) Pelot chipped in to acquire a trophy in her memory, to be awarded to the winner of the new "Kayak" class in the annual 'Round the Island regatta race.

The "Cup" was presented to Jim Leask, the 2006 winner, by President Craig Brown.

A NOTE OF THANKS from the Association to the Stewart Family at Birch Crest Resort for making their facilities available to us for our Annual General Meeting and especially for the Regatta.
With the acquisition of the former "Millars Performance" marina in Burks Falls, (now
Stewarts Recreation) their year round service offering is very comprehensive.
We are indeed fortunate to have such stable ownership of the only commercial enterprise on the lake, and direct our members to their websites for details of their services:
